The Phoenix Regional Sports Commission is one of the oldest Sports Commissions in the United States. The mission of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is to represent the citizens of the Valley to bring national and international sporting events to the state; assist in the promotion of existing events and teams, and support youth sports programs. Our mission statement is to “Enrich Our Community Through Sports.”
The Phoenix Regional Sports Commission is led by a volunteer board of directors made up of 48 of the Valley’s top community leaders. The day-to-day operations are led by the staff of Jon Schmieder, Amanda Petru, Catherine Aker, Ed Durkin, Leslie Reedy, and Lori Muncie.
Some of the paramount accomplishments of the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission have happened within the last year:
- The Arizona Sports Hall of Fame’s 41th Induction Ceremony, which is the largest annual fundraiser for the organization, nearly doubled in size and funds raised in comparison to the previous year. Inductees this year included Curt Schilling, Kerri Strug, Ty Murray, Randall McDaniel and the 1997 Championship University of Arizona Basketball team.
- The Sports Commission hosted the second annual Youth Sports Summit. More than 90 of Maricopa County’s most influential youth sports leaders, who represent more than 300,000 youth athletes, gathered to establish and implement the Champions Circle program. This program engages youth leaders to set a standard for enriching youth sports in the Valley through fundamental policies and safety measures.
- In partnership with key community leaders, the Sports Commission created the 2010 City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation funding program. The program was instrumental in keeping facilities like Reach 11 Sports Complex and three main softball facilities, including Rose Mofford Softball Complex, operating.
- The Sports Commission was recognized by Mayor Phil Gordon and the City of Phoenix with “The More With Less” Award.Proudly, the Sports Commission also achieved its “$100 million mission.”
- Through agreements with US Lacrosse, USA Field Hockey, Senior Softball and other important partners, the Sports Commission was able to produce $100,000,000 of direct visitor spending for the local economy.
